Mark Martin had a career year in 1998. Unfortunately, someone else had a better one.

Martin won seven times, netted 22 top-5s and 26 top-10s and brought home well over $3 million in prize money. From early May through late August, he had a remarkable string of 14 straight finishes of seventh or better. Yet he still finished second in points -- behind Jeff Gordon, who had a career year of his own with 13 wins.

He did all this despite beginning the year with an almost entirely new team. There was a great deal of turnover in the No. 6 shop from '97 to '98, not to mention the fact that the shop itself actually moved. The Valvoline team is now in the same location as Martin's teammate, the No. 99 Exide Batteries Ford of Jeff Burton.

With a full year under their belts, the 6 team should be stronger than ever -- and that elusive first championship could finally belong to Martin.

Martin is quite certainly the greatest active NASCAR Winston Cup Series driver without a championship. He has 29 wins in 12 full seasons on the circuit. He has finished in the top-5 in points six straight years, and hasn't finished a season lower than sixth since 1988.

Martin is one of the few drivers who is a legitimate threat to win every week. In '98 he notched victories on tracks ranging from the half-mile at Bristol to the two-mile facilities at Michigan in California. Throw in '97 wins at the road course at Sears Point and the superspeedway at Talladega, and it's clear that Martin is as skilled an all-around driver as you'll find.

Martin started running NASCAR Winston Cup Series races in 1981, entering five races and winning two poles. He finished second to Geoffrey Bodine for the 1982 NASCAR Winston Cup Series Rookie of the Year.

His first full season on the circuit came in 1988. In the 1989 AC Delco 500 at Rockingham he won his first race, after 112 starts and six second-place finishes.

In 1990 he was second to Dale Earnhardt in the season championship chase by a mere 26 points. He has won $1 million or more now for 10 consecutive years.

Yes, Even know that Jeff Gordon is good. Every body still HATES HIM. Every time you see Jeff Gordon in a wreck or something bad happens to him every body cheers and is happy that he wrecked.

Now, here is a real race car driver. A 6 time Winston Cup Champion and have won the Daytona 500 many times, recent one was 1998...Dale Earnhardt.
